Brussels, 15/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - Amnesty International has urged the European governments to bring justice to the victims of the illegal returns and secret detention programmes carried out by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and which have allegedly been manifested in forced disappearances, acts of torture and ill-treatment inflicted on certain people. “The government of the member states have a legal obligation to make sure that they are fully accountable for their acts as regards these infringements of human rights”, said Nicolas Beger, Director of the European office of Amnesty International, on Monday 15 November, on the occasion of the publication of a new report. This report, entitled “Open secret: Mounting evidence of Europe's complicity in rendition and secret detention”, brings together the final elements which shed light on the complicity of European states in programmes created by the CIA as part of the fight against terrorism on the eve of the attacks of 11 September 2001. Investigations into these practices have been carried out or are underway in countries such as Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom and Sweden. “The situation is moving on slowly, with some countries having initiated investigations, but much remains to be done”, said Beger.
