Poland opposes Italian G6 proposal

Brussels, 08/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - Italy's suggestion of setting up a consultative group comprising the six main EU member countries (“G6”) to prepare the major European Council decisions has not gone down well in Warsaw, even though Poland is among the six countries proposed by Rome. “I would be wary of any formal division of countries into categories. We have enough such distinctions already and they make life difficult. Those members that would not participate would feel excluded and resentful,” said Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski in the Financial Times of 8 November. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini floated the idea last week of a G6 as an alternative to Franco-German consultations which too often result, he said, in “precooked decisions”, prepared by Berlin and Paris and then put to the European Council to be rubber stamped (see EUROPE 10251).
