MEPs on assignment to Upper Karabakh

Brussels, 08/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy has announced in a press release that a delegation of MEPs was in Armenia and Upper Karabakh from 27 to 31 October this year in order to investigate the Karabakh conflict. During their stay in Armenia, Michèle Rivasi (Greens, France) and Damien Abad (EPP, France), who were accompanied by personnel from the European Parliament, took stock of the situation. “It is unacceptable that hundreds of thousands of Armenians victim to pogrom and deportation by Azerbaijan be deprived of international refugee status”, Michèle Rivasi said as reported by the federation. She suggested that an international investigation be set in place on acts of violence perpetrated against the Armenians, which triggered the conflict in Karabakh. “I believe that the OSCE Minsk Group remains the most suitable format for finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict”, Damien Abad said. The MEPs will study the possibility of assisting the inhabitants of Upper Karabakh in the fields of the environment, energy and education. The Euro-Armenian federation has welcomed these meetings, which allow MEPs to complete their knowledge of the conflict in Karabakh in its legal, political and humanitarian dimensions.
