Brussels, 18/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - In a call to Pierluigi Bersani, leader of the Democratic Party (DP), a group of federalists suggest that the thought and work of Altiero Spinelli should be an integral part of the identity the political programme of the main Italian opposition party. The federalists' call has been picked up in the Italian press, at a time of something of a Spinelli revival (with the creation of an all-party group in the European Parliament, the imminent publication of a book entitled “Begin again from Spinelli” and quotes by Spinelli in speeches of prominent members of the Italian Left). The text of the call can be found on the site of one of Spinelli's biographers, Piero Graglia (http://www.pierograglia.eu ), who is among the signatories, along with, inter alia, former Secretary of the European Federalist Movement Luigi Vittorio Maiocchi and the head of the Spinelli Committee, Francesco Gui. According to the signatories, the real Italian national interest is now at European level: the DP should take this into account and improve its understanding and management of the principles and mechanisms of European debate and decision-making.
