Brussels, 18/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The Bulgarian police has recently broken up a workshop producing false currency in Bulgaria, seizing a total of 130,000 forged euros and 37,500 forged dollars. These fake notes had been put into circulation in around 20 European countries, the director general of the European Agency for Police Cooperation (Europol) announced on Friday 15 October. On 1 October, the Bulgarian police broke up the workshop producing false currency in the village of Dolno Sahrane, in central Bulgaria. The workshop was producing denominations of 20, 50 and 100 euros and 50-dollar bills. The machine had been placed next to a pigsty, so that its operating noise would be covered up by the animals. The owner of the premises, a 43-year-old Bulgarian man, was arrested on 1 October when he handed over 50,000 fake euros and 10,000 forged dollars to two other Bulgarians, both aged 24. Europol co-ordinated and supported the investigation with the collaboration of the Bulgarian authorities and American secret services. (B.C./transl.fl)
