EU welcomes opening of new border crossing

Brussels, 14/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The opening of the Limnitis/Yeºilirmak crossing point between the Republic of Cyprus and the northern part of the island, inaugurated on Thursday 14 October, is an “encouraging signal” bearing witness to the fact that the two communities - Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots - are continuing their rapprochement, said Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle, who had attended the opening of this 7th crossing point in person. “Another physical barrier is gone. Slowly but surely, confidence-building measures are spreading (…) We can only conclude that there is progress in Cyprus”, he said. The aim is still to unite the island and integrate the northern part into the EU, Füle said, adding: “The European project will not be complete without a solution to the Cyprus problem”. In this respect, the commissioner welcomes the determination shown by the leaders of both communities, Demetris Christofias and Dervis Eroglu, to continue and to bring talks on reunification to a satisfactory conclusion. “I am convinced that you can manage this historic task”, Füle told the two men.
