14/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - A single binding target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the whole transport sector: that was one of the ideas put forward at a conference on the decarbonisation of the transport system, organised by the Community of European Rail and Infrastructure Companies (CER) on Tuesday 12 October. The conference also confirmed that there should be internalisation of external costs in all transport sectors and demonstrated the importance of technological innovation in tackling pollution caused by transport. To enhance the modernisation and interoperability of the rail sector, the European Rail agency (ERA) and the International Union of railways (UIC) have signed a memorandum of understanding on increasing cooperation in Global System for Mobile communications (GSM-R) specifications. The UIC says that GSM-R is currently deployed on more than 65,000 kilometres of railway in Europe. This figure is expected to reach 140,000 kilometres by 2015. (A.By./transl.rt)
