Brussels, 24/08/2010 (Agence Europe) - On 17 August, the European Commission authorised the recapitalisation of the Dutch insurance company AEGON. The decision was taken further to an in-depth examination of the preliminary and final plans of the company, which were presented on 19 November 2009 and 26 July 2010 respectively by the Dutch authorities. On 27 November 2008, the Commission authorised the recapitalisation as a temporary safeguard measure. The final plan states how AEGON intends to ensure its long-term viability, will guarantee that the fees are spread sufficiently between the state and it and will compensate the limited distortion effects of the aid measures, which corresponds to the commitment made by the Netherlands. The Commission reached the conclusion that the aid complied with its communication on restructuring aid and that it was therefore compatible with article 107, paragraph 3, point b), of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, which authorises aid to remedy a serious disturbance to the economy of a member state.
