Brussels, 14/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, announced on Wednesday 14 July, that asylum policy would soon be one of the main priorities on her agenda. This subject will also be discussed on Thursday during the informal EU home affairs ministers meeting in Brussels. The commissioner informed a number of journalists that “together with the European Parliament and the Belgian Presidency, we are looking at how we will be able to go forward on the asylum package, of which certain proposals going back two years are still blocked” by the member states. According to the commissioner, the Brussels meeting will enable them to look at what levels the difficulties are located and “how it will be possible to move forward”. Malmström explained that although no concrete result was expected from this meeting, she did, nonetheless, expect that they would be “very busy”, particularly on this dossier. Progress has been achieved on four of the six proposals currently on the Council's table: the Eurodac regulation, the long-term residency directive, the directive on qualifications and the Dublin regulation. With regard to the two other proposals, focusing on asylum procedures and the reception directive, it will be difficult to obtain a compromise under the Belgian Presidency. The other subject on the commissioner's agenda at the end of the autumn will be the presentation of the European internal security strategy, which will focus on certain threats such as organised crime and crime on the internet.
