01/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - Three former inmates of the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, who were taken in by Slovakia in January this year, are on a hunger strike to protest against conditions at a detention camp where they are being held. “Over the past five months spent in Slovakia, they have not known what their legal status is and do not know what is to become of them”, deplored Branislav Tichy, Director of Amnesty International in Slovakia, who said the prisoners were being held in “conditions similar to Guantanamo”. It is said they are not allowed to see their families, they only have beds and a sink at their disposal, and they are only allowed to leave the room in which they are kept for one hour per day. The Slovak authorities are currently deciding on the detainees' legal status. (B.C./transl.jl)
