Strasbourg, 18/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament, in a resolution adopted in plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday 17 June, condemns the reported execution of 18 people in Benghazi, Libya on 30 May. The 18 included nationals of Chad, Egypt and Nigeria, and had been convicted of premeditated murder. The Parliament resolution reiterates its opposition to the death penalty “in all cases and under all circumstances” and presses the Libyan authorities to make progress towards a moratorium on executions. It also asks EU member states which deport migrants to Libya to “stop doing so immediately where there is a serious risk that the person concerned would be subjected to the death penalty, torture or other inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”. Parliament argues that any cooperation or agreement between the EU and Libya must be conditional on the ratification and implementation by Libya of the Geneva Convention on Refugees and of other major human right conventions and protocols.
