Parliament unhappy at lack of progress

Brussels, 18/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament (EP) is dissatisfied with the “limited progress” made by Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on stabilisation and economic development, and also on EU integration. In a resolution adopted on 17 June, MEPs express their growing concern at the “the unstable political climate and the lack of a common vision shared by all political forces”. The move by the leaders of the Republika Srpska to hold a referendum on peaceful separation is criticised by the EP as a “provocation and a threat to the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH”. All the country's political leaders must move to bring a swift end to the nationalistic and secessionist rhetoric which is polarising society and underlining the Dayton peace agreement, MEPs say. The EP notes with satisfaction, however, that the Bosniak authorities have speeded up their reforms and made “considerable progress” towards meeting the conditions set by the EU with a view to visa liberalisation. These efforts, which were rewarded on 27 May by the European Commission's legislative proposal to lift visa requirements, shows that “with the necessary will significant progress in reforms can be achieved,” MEPs note. The European Parliament is also calling for far-reaching constitutional reform. (H.B./transl.rt)
