High-ranking dairy group unveils its recommendations

Brussels, 15/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The high-ranking group on dairy products and milk has unveiled its report setting out a number of recommendations to the European Commission, such as “an invitation to come forward with concrete moves to enhance the use of written contracts in the dairy supply chain and to consider proposals to increase the collective bargaining power of dairy producers” and to consider new EU legislation to increase dairy farmers' bargaining power and collective bargaining. Set up in October 2009 in the midst of the crisis, which saw dairy farmers receiving very little of the prices paid by consumers for milk (see EUROPE 9991), to examine ways of stabilising dairy farmers' income and increase transparency on the market, the experts have met up ten times. In a press release published on 15 June, EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Cioloº welcomed the report, saying he will examine it closely “with a view to coming forward with legislative proposals before the end of the year... My main aim is that we consider medium to long term measures which address the lessons learned from last year's crisis aimed at better structuring the sector as a whole.” The report can be found at: http://www.ec.europa.eu/agriculture/markets/milk/index_en.htm.
