Brussels, 31/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - During their discussions on Monday 31 May 2010, EU Member States' telecoms ministers said a code of digital rights for electronic communications and online services should be set up. Europeans are often unaware of their rights online or how to exercise them. Consumer digital rights are spread across a number of EU regulations and many have not been explicitly transposed into domestic law, which makes things difficult for consumers, explained the Spanish Presidency in a memorandum to the delegations. EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes said it would be of crucial aid to encouraging trust if an additional layer of consumer rights were introduced. She said that a code of digital rights would be one of a range of measures that should be taken to ensure the online market functions properly. A dispute-settlement system and a code of good trading practice are also required. (I.L. trans fl)
