Brussels, 31/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - After a long period of hesitation, Germany has finally agreed to take in detainees from the EU Guantanamo prison camp. Last weekend German Home Affairs Minister Thomas de Maisière said that Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted “to help the Americans” on this issue, the magazine Focus reports. This means that Germany is ready to accept at least one of the three detainees (a Syrian and two Palestinians) which the United States asked Berlin to take in during secret talks. Last week, Foreign Minister Franco Frattini announced that Italy would take in two further Guantanamo detainees. It is believed that some 180 people are still being held in the US detention centre (see EUROPE 10134). (B.C./transl.rt)
