Brussels, 27/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - A few days before World No-Tobacco Day 2010 (Monday 31 May), Commissioner John Dalli on 27 May presented the results of a Eurobarometer survey, which revealed that the vast majority of European Union citizens are in favour of stricter anti-smoking measures. Three out of four Europeans are therefore in favour of pictorial warnings on tobacco product packets and banning smoking in restaurants. The survey reveals, however, that almost a third of Europeans still smoke “despite the tobacco kills warning to smokers”, indicates the Commission in a press release.
John Dalli, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, said: "Tobacco kills 650,000 Europeans every year, and many lives could be saved from reducing tobacco consumption. I am particularly concerned about smoking rates amongst young people: Europe cannot passively watch future generations smoke away their health!" The commissioner added: "I am determined to do everything in my power to reduce tobacco consumption across Europe via the upcoming revision of existing legislation on tobacco products and consider measures that can contribute to a clear and effective set of rules to support Europeans' health."
Dalli announced that the Commission intended to launch a public consultation before the summer in view of reviewing the 2001 directive on tobacco products and stepping up anti-tobacco efforts throughout the European Union. The Commission is also planning on presenting a revised draft directive in the second half of 2011. This revision mainly aims to reduce the attractiveness of tobacco products for young people and reinforce prevention, explained the commissioner.
The Commission has sponsored the creation and dissemination of two new TV spots aimed at young people, in particular women. The spots will be aired across Europe on more than 130 channels as from 31 May 2010. (O.J./transl.fl)
