Parliamentary delegation to Mali

Brussels, 20/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - With the EU working to strengthen cooperation with third countries in managing migratory flows, an EP delegation will travel to Bamako on 26-27 May for meetings with the Malian authorities and representatives of the Migration Information and Management Centre (CIGEM) which was set up in cooperation with the EU. The delegation from the civil liberties committee will be made up of MEPs Agustín Díaz de Mera (EPP, Spain) and Tanja Fajon (S&D, Slovenia). The MEPs will visit the CIGEM than take part in a joint meeting with representatives of the “Transfer of knowledge through expatriate nationals” project. They will meet representatives of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). They will also meet the Minister for Employment and Vocational Training, Ibrahima N'Diaye, the President of the National Assembly, Dioncounda Traoré, and the Minister for Internal Security, General Sadio Gassama. The MEPs will see how the CIGEM, which was established in Mali in 2009, works and what it does. The aim of the project, with €10 million in funding from the European Development Fund, is to contribute to the preparation and implementation of a migration policy that is adapted to national, regional and international dynamics, putting particular emphasis on the link between migration and development.
