03/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - Amnesty International (AI) and representatives of the Belgian bars sounded the alarm on Thursday 29 April. They have called on Belgium and all the other EU member states immediately to suspend all transfers of asylum seekers to Greece until such time as protection of the asylum seekers' fundamental rights can be guaranteed. A number of European countries are continuing to send asylum seekers back to Greece, as is provided for in the European Dublin II regulation, despite this regulation's allowing member states, in certain circumstances, to process the application themselves. A recent AI report highlights the failure of the Greek authorities to put in place a fair and accessible asylum procedure. Of the 20,000 asylum requests processed in the first seven months of 2009, asylum was granted in only 20 cases. (B.C./transl.rt)
