Brussels, 29/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - On 5 May, the European Commission is expected to suggest that an agreement be concluded with Georgia aimed at simplifying visa issuance for Georgian citizens wishing to enter the Schengen Area, as well as readmission agreements for illegal migrants. The proposal for a visa facilitation agreement is expected to allow visa issuance procedures to be speeded up for Georgian nationals. On this occasion, the European executive arm, the Commission, will suggest the cost of having a visa delivered be reduced from €60 to €35. Both proposals should then be approved by EU member states and the European Parliament before they can take effect. Welcoming the Commission's future announcement, MEP Gunnar Hökmark (EPP, Sweden) said that his party would do its utmost for the two agreements to be applied as soon as possible. This, said Hökmark, is a “significant step in opening the doors of the European Union to the Georgian people”. (B.C./transl.jl)
