22/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - Copa-Cogeca, in a press release published on Wednesday 21 April, offered its support to Icelandic farmers close to the volcanic eruption. Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen pointed out that the region affected is an important agricultural area, accounting for 15% of all Icelandic cattle, 6% of all sheep flocks, and 17% of the horse population. He said that the volcanic ash brings toxins which can be harmful to both animals and humans, adding that another of the major dangers caused by the eruption is the flooding. “The eruption shows the disastrous effect natural disasters can have on farming, creating unpredictable harvests, volatile prices and loss of income. A robust farm policy, which safeguards the food security and ensures a fair income to farmers, is therefore vital,” he said. (C-C.G/transl.rt)
