EP gives green light to European Asylum Support Office

Brussels, 09/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 8 April, the committee on civil liberties (Libe) of the European Parliament approved, by 40 votes in favour, five against and one abstention, the report by the UK member Jean Lambert (Greens) on the creation of the European Asylum Support Office. The MEP's report is the subject of a compromise negotiated with the Council of the EU and is likely to be adopted with no problems by the MEPs at their plenary session to take place in Strasbourg from 19 to 22 April. "I sincerely hope that the Office will prove to provide real added value when it comes to improving the quality and capacity of member states' asylum systems, above all to help ensure that protection is provided to those who need it", said Lambert after the vote. The Office, which will be headquartered in Valletta (Malta), will make it possible not only to ensure that the member states work together with the same high levels of standards, but also help to put an end to the lottery of treatment that asylum seekers face in Europe, the MEP added, going on to welcome the close cooperation provided for with the UN High Commission for Refugees. "However, the Office will not solve everything. The responsibility to ensure a high quality delivery of the Common European Asylum System lies within member states", she concluded. (B.C./transl.fl)
