Brussels, 09/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - MEP Constance Le Grip (EPP, France) has, as EPP Group rapporteur, welcomed the adoption of the opinion on internet governance by the European Parliament internal market committee. In the wake of the communication from the European Commission, the opinion considers the next steps on internet governance within international bodies and the role of the European institutions. Le Grip particularly welcomes the amendments which the EPP Group was successful in getting adopted so that the importance of the private sector in internet governance is recognised, a reference to human rights and intellectual property rights as principles of internet governance is included, and a procedure is set up whereby the Commission has to inform Parliament regularly about internet governance in an effort to achieve greater transparency. In its communication, the Commission says that the EU should continue to lay great store by a worldwide, sure and stable internet, respect for human rights, freedom of expression, privacy, personal data protection and the promotion of cultural and linguistic diversity. Parliament is due to adopt the opinion on 14 June 2010 (first and only reading). (I.L./transl.rt)
