Commission to present European Heritage Awards 2010 in Istanbul on 10 June

Brussels, 09/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission and Europa Nostra, a pan-European cultural heritage federation, have published the list of the 29 winners from 15 countries for the 2010 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards. This awards programme highlights some of Europe's finest achievements, and showcases remarkable efforts made in safeguarding Europe's rich architectural, landscape, archaeological and artistic heritage. The awards ceremony will be held in Istanbul, Turkey on 10 June 2010 as part of the Europa Nostra Annual Congress. The events will also form part of the celebration of Istanbul as a European Capital of Culture 2010. The awards will be presented by European Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou and Europa Nostra Executive President Denis de Kergorlay.

The European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards, which have been organised jointly by the European Commission and Europa Nostra since 2002, showcase the best achievements in maintaining and preserving Europe's shared cultural heritage. This year's winners have been selected from among almost 140 submitted projects from 26 counties. At the awards ceremony on 10 June, six of the 29 will be crowned “Grand Prix” winners as 2010's most outstanding examples of heritage protection, and will receive €10,000 prizes.
