Preparing for 25 - 26 March European Summit

Brussels, 19/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - There is only one point on the agenda for the General Affairs Council in Brussels in the afternoon of Monday 22 March (chaired by Spain's foreign minister and chair of the Council Miguel Ángel Moratinos) namely preparing for the 25-26 March European summit. Foreign and European ministers will discuss and review the draft conclusions document prepared by Herman Van Rompuy. At the moment, there are two items on the agenda for the summit - the new EU 2020 Economic Strategy (to be adopted in June) and discussing the outcome and follow-up to the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen. The Greek debt crisis and any EU aid measures for the country have not yet been added to the summit's agenda, but diplomats say that may well change before Thursday. A joint General Affairs Council (European affairs ministers) and Foreign Affairs Council (foreign ministers) will be held on Monday afternoon from 3.00pm onward to discuss the EU's new diplomatic corps (European External Action Service, EEAS, see related article). On Monday evening, foreign ministers (or European ministers) will dine with the permanent president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, to discuss next week's summit. (H.B./transl.fl)
