Brussels, 01/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - A study by the Commission, which was published on Monday 1February, recommends the creation of a European agency specifically tasked with enforcing European legislation on waste. This agency would be responsible for examining the systems for checking the application of European waste legislation in the Member States, coordinated checks and inspection activities. At the same time, a European body would also be set up with responsibility for carrying out direct inspections and checks on installations and sites in the event of serious infringements. A European network of Member States would assist the agency in other activities. In 2008, the Parliament called upon the Commission to take position on the feasibility of a "Community environmental inspection force". (A.N./trans.fl)
