Brussels, 29/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - As the next energy commissioner, Günter Oettinger, will not be taking up his post until 10 February at the earliest, and as the appointment of the director general of the future DG Energy will not be until the weeks after this, one must expect little progress on the nuclear option under Spanish Presidency, a Community source explained to EUROPE. The agenda of the Spanish EU Presidency, however, foresees that the European Commission will make proposals during the first term of this year for negotiating briefs with a view to Euratom cooperation agreements with South Africa and Australia, and for negotiation progress reports for Euratom cooperation agreements with Canada and Russia. In addition under Spanish Presidency, there will be renewal of the Euratom/Kedo agreement with South Korea. Also expected are: - a Euratom report on the 5th meeting for revision of the convention on nuclear safety; - reports on meetings of national nuclear regulators (ENSREG) and the European forum on nuclear energy; - a report on the work of ENSREG on nuclear waste; - a report on the process for revision of the nuclear-non-proliferation treaty; - a Commission report on reliability; - a final report on nuclear safety in Ukraine; - and an information report on implementing integrated safeguards in the EU. The Commission should also place on the table a draft regulation establishing a Community system for the registration of radioactive material transport and a draft directive on radioactive fuel and waste.
