Brussels, 18/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk is to receive the Charlemagne Prize for his work to promote Europe. The 2010 prize will be awarded to him “in recognition of his work for furthering liberty and democracy in Europe” and for developing “the understanding and cooperation of Poland with its European partners”, it is stated in a press release from the Charlemagne Prize Society, which, since 1950, has each year paid tribute to those contributing to advancing the European cause. Mr Tusk is also rewarded for the role he has played in counteracting anti-European nationalism elsewhere as well as in Poland. In a press release on 16 January, the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, congratulates Donald Tusk and points out that “he has played a major role in integrating Poland into the EU and placing his country at the heart of Europe since its accession in 2004”.
