Brussels, 18/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on Thursday 14 January, Eleni Marianou, the new Secretary General of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), spoke of the CPMR contribution to the Commission's consultation exercise on the EU 2020 strategy. Offering its full support for the EU 2020 vision of a more inclusive, more sustainable, greener and strong knowledge-based society, rather than an economy only, the CPMR document also supports the EU 2020 strategy “as the single overarching approach embodying EU core priorities and integrating the set of existing thematic strategies,” Marianou stated.
In its contribution, the CPMR calls on the Commission to refuse possible sectorisation of EU intervention and argues for a delivery method based on the territorial approach. Although the Commission refers to the principle of territorial cohesion introduced by the Lisbon Treaty, the CPMR does not feel that the text gives any guarantee on its actual implementation. Therefore, the CPMR draws attention to the fact that any action aimed at implementing the EU 2020 strategy will have to take account of this principle and of territorial specificities as defined by Article 174 (ex Art. 158) of the Treaty, the press release says.
