Brussels, 18/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - The fate of the commissioner-designate for humanitarian aid, Rumiana Jeleva, was at stake on Monday evening (18 January) when political coordinators of the European Parliament development committee met to draft the letter setting out the committee's assessment of the Bulgarian candidate. A negative opinion would no doubt compel Mr Barroso to drop Ms Jeleva (or at least entrust another portfolio to her) and the Bulgarian government to propose another candidate. Failing this, the Barroso II team would run the risk of a negative vote at the EP on 26 January. On Monday, Socialists, Greens and Liberals were against Ms Jeleva and called for her to be replaced. The EPP, on the other hand, supported by part of the Conservative group, maintained its support for the incumbent Bulgarian foreign minister, as did José Manuel Barroso. On Friday evening (15 January), the Commission president had answered the letter from EP President Jerzy Buzek (EUROPE 10057), reaffirming his confidence in Ms Jeleva, not only regarding the conformity of her declaration of interest but also regarding her professional competence. After checking the truth of financial information provided by Ms Jeleva, the EP legal department also came to the conclusion that she had abided by the rules in force. (H.B./transl.jl)
