18/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - At the Agriculture Council on Monday 17 January, Belgium, with the support of Austria, Germany and Lithuania, called for measures to be taken quickly to allow more sugar to be exported without refunds. The 1.3 million tonne ceiling on non-quota sugar production set by the WTO has recently been reached, and operators are complaining that they have been unable to dispose of the excess sugar. The European Commission said that it would look at the possibility of going above the ceiling and promised a response before the end of the month. (L.C./transl.rt)
