New Greenland halibut recovery plan approved

Brussels, 24/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg on Tuesday 24 November, the European Parliament approved, with no amendments, the proposal amending the recovery plan for Greenland halibut enacted by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) (see EUROPE 9867 for Commission's initial proposal). The report by Carmen Fraga Estévez (EPP, Spain), which was adopted by the EP, notes that the amendments brought to the recovery plan relate to enhanced measures for catch reporting and additional control measures to enhance at-sea inspections of vessels entering or leaving the NAFO regulatory area. These amendments had been temporarily transposed into Community law by regulations establishing fishing possibilities in Community waters for 2008 and 2009. The amendments being compulsory, they had to be transposed into Community law in a more long-term manner. (L.C./transl.rt)
