19/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Union expresses concern at the growing tension between Venezuela and Colombia. In a statement published on Thursday 19 November, the EU states its concern at the situation of tension reigning at the frontier between Colombia and Venezuela, with continuing threats between the two neighbour countries. Instability has prevailed since an agreement was signed end October between Bogota and Washington, allowing the US army to use at least seven military bases in Colombia in the context of the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism. “The European Union calls on both parties to abide by international law and existing mutual agreements, to refrain from any actions or statements that may further deteriorate the situation, and to take steps to seek solutions by dialogue and possible confidence-building measures, including through the support of regional bodies”.
