19/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 2 December in Brussels, the European Commission will be holding a conference on road safety in the European Union. The event will provide an opportunity to publish the results of a public consultation exercise on the new European action programme for road safety during the years 2011-2020. In parallel, the United Nations has begun its own action to heighten awareness on road safety with the launch, on Wednesday 18 November in Moscow, of a first high level international conference on this issue. The conference is expected to adopt a declaration on Friday calling on the United Nations to launch a decade of action for road safety in 2010 or 2011. This will be aimed at halving the number of road deaths forecast until 2020, i.e. at saving five million lives. (A.By./tansl.jl)
