Brussels, 19/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - Karel De Gucht, European Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, welcomes the latest events showing the increased cooperation between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda with a view to resolving the problems to the east of the Congo.
The commissioner sees the DRC ambassador's presentation of letters of credence to Rwanda and the arrest of a leader of the “Forces démocratiques de Libération de Rwanda” (FDLR) and of his deputy in Germany as “two positive developments demonstrating that, on both international and regional levels, there is a real will to work towards the stabilisation of the Great Lakes region”. The commissioner expressed these views in a declaration published on Wednesday 18 November, saying: “Things are on track. The exchange of ambassadors will largely facilitate dialogue between the two countries. As far as the fight against impunity is concerned, I trust that other European countries and countries of the world will soon follow Germany's brave example”. (A.N./transl.jl)
