13/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on Sunday 12 July on Europe 1 radio on the subject of possible authorisation for mega-lorries (over 60 tonnes in weight and over 25.5 metres long), the former European transport commissioner, Jacques Barrot (who currently holds the justice and home affairs portfolio), said he was taking a “cautious” stance. “This must not bring road safety and the development of rail freight into question”, he said, as the debate rages in France, Denmark, the Netherlands and in a number of German Länder on allowing the lorries to circulate in certain border regions. Mr Barrot, on the other hand, said he was in favour of a global black list of airlines to be banned from flying, a suggestion recently put forward by his current transport counterpart, Antonio Tajani (see EUROPE 9939).
