29/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - The decision taken by the Romanian government in 2008 to dismiss the president of the national telecommunications regulatory authority and then, after a decision of justice suspending the measure, to restructure and rename the authority, is, according to the European Commission, a serious affront on the independence of the regulator. After repeated warnings, the Commission has begun infringement proceedings against Romania (formal letter of notice). In addition to the proceedings initiated against Romania, the Commission opened seven earlier proceedings against member states concerning the independence of national telecommunications regulators (L.C./transl.jl)
