29/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission announced on Thursday 29 January that it had referred the case of Portugal to the Court of Justice of the European Communities because the Portuguese authorities had not appointed companies responsible for providing basic telephone services according to open selection procedure, from which no company should be excluded, in accordance with EU telecommunications regulations. Furthermore, the Commission has closed five infringement proceedings against EU member states (Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Luxembourg and Cyprus) that have taken national measures to remedy the problems in question.
