01/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg on Thursday 27 November, Miguel Angel Moratinos set out his country's priorities for the coming six months when it will hold the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. Spain will place particular importance on the work of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT), which will mark its 20 years of existence in 2009. It will concentrate its activities on the fight against the death penalty, gender discrimination, protection of the rights of the handicapped, gender-related violence and human trafficking. The Spanish chairmanship will hold the first meeting of the parties to the Convention for the Prevention of Terrorism in the spring. Spain will also work on: - migration and tackling the trafficking of immigrants; - managing multi-ethnic and culturally diverse societies; - children and justice; - the situation of the Roma and travelling people. Spain succeeds Sweden, and its term of office will end on 12 May 2009, at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers in Madrid, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Council of Europe (5 May 1949).
