19/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 17 November, the European Parliament civil liberties committee (Libe) adopted the report by Marco Cappato (ALDE, Italy) unopposed, with one abstention. The report urges the EU institutions to do more to open up their registers and documents to the public. Following a recent Court of Justice ruling, MEPs are calling on the Council to hold all its debates in public and on Parliament to publish more information on its Members' activities, their attendance record at Parliamentary meetings and their allowances and expenditure. They also want an inter-institutional search engine and a “single EU register/portal” for information and documents. The institutions are urged to improve the transparency of the procedures for comitology and for agreements thrashed out at first-reading of the co-decision procedure through trialogues. The report will be put to the vote at the Strasbourg plenary in December. (B.C./transl.rt)
