14/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - In the presence of Kimi Räikkonen (2007 Formula One world champion), the vice-president of the Commission responsible for transport, Antonio Tajani, reiterated on Thursday 10 July his commitment and that of the Commission in favour of road safety and the aim to reduce the number of fatal road accidents in the 27 EU countries by 50% by 2010. “Every day, 25 young people die in road accidents”, he said after a youth forum on road safety organised in Brussels. He went on to stress that respect of the safety rules is a necessary condition for preventing these deaths. He said it is all right to drive fast during a car race but, when driving home after the disco, then the rules must be obeyed. According to the data given by the Commission, 18-25 year olds represent about 20% of those killed every year on European roads. (A.By./transl.jl)
