Brussels, 14/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - At the start of the holiday season, the European Commission has taken the opportunity to alert consumers to the new suncream labelling rules that came into force with the publication of a recommendation in September 2006. EU Consumer Protection Commissioner Meglena Kuneva said: “Our message to consumers this summer is very clear. Look out for these new labels and make an informed decision”. The European Commission's recommendation suggests dropping 'misleading terms' like 'sun block' or 'total protection', improving labelling about protection against UVA rays and the use of 'standardised verbal descriptors' like 'low', 'medium', 'high' and 'very high'. Colipa (a European trade association representing the interests of the cosmetics, toiletry and perfumery industry) discovered in a survey that most products sold in 2008 respected the recommendation, as do virtually all products manufactured in 2008. The European Commission is delighted that the industry is taking its responsibilities seriously. (A.D/transl.fl)
