Brussels, 14/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - During a forum in Budva (Montenegro) on 30 June that focused on science, higher education and innovation, the European Commissioner for science and research, Janez Potocnik defined the priorities for strengthening the research capacity of Western Balkan countries. There are three areas in the action plan. The Commissioner believes that the top priority is boosting cooperation in research at regional and European levels. Secondly, he calls on countries in this region to define their integrated research capacities. His final recommendation involves the modernisation and improvement of research capacity. Mr Potocnik explained that in order to attain these objectives it goes without saying that a total commitment is required, as well as good organisation and solid funding. He also regretted the fact that research budgets had not progressed very much in this region. He is, nevertheless, still optimistic and pointed out that the European Commission “will provide as much aid as possible”. In his conclusion the Commissioner declared, “I expect the Western Balkans to become a force in science and innovation and a solid partner in South East Europe”. (B.C./trans/rh)
