21/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - Of the €259 million euro allocated by the Council in February 2006 to promote economic development in the Turkish Cypriot community (regulation 389/2006), €13.5 million are currently being used to prepare the northern part of Cyprus for the application of the acquis communautaire (body of Community law) in the event of reunification of the island. This was revealed in the 2006-2007 annual report on how the aid is being used (COM 2007/536) which the Commission adopted on Tuesday 18 September. A further €9.5 million are earmarked for use in breaking the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community by increasing contact with the EU through: - a Community system offering study grants to students and teachers; - subsidies to facilitate interpersonal contacts; - setting up an information point on the EU and its policies. Cyprus' Act of Accession (protocol 10) states that, while awaiting the resolution of the Cypriot problem, the application of the acquis in the north of the island will be “suspended”.
