Brussels, 21/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Brussels on Thursday 20 September in the presence of Social Affairs Commissioner Vladimir Spidla and the general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), John Monks, the Socialist Group at the European Parliament identified seven common principles to reconcile flexibility and security on the employment market. Details of these principles are set out in a contribution forwarded to the Portuguese EU presidency and Commissioner Spidla, a press release from the Socialist Group states. The principles are: (1) qualified labour able to adjust through lifelong learning; (2) measures against precarious employment; (3) an end to labour market fragmentation; (4) dialogue with trade unions, especially though promotion of vigorous trade unions and negotiation of collective agreements; (5) gender equality, which presupposes measures to balance professional life with family life; (6) a macro-economic framework for growth and employment through better coordination of macro-economic and budgetary policies in member states; and (7) integration of national flexicurity strategies in national programmes of the Lisbon strategy.
