21/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 20 September, Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany deplored the fact that Austria wants to maintain joint controls at its borders after enlargement of the Schengen Area foreseen for the end of December. “How should I explain that we are a Schengen member but our Austrian friends are still controlling (passports)? And should we do the same … Should we just stop Austrians at the border?” he asks in Der Standard. The Czech foreign minister, Karel Schwarzenberg, for his part, said that Vienna's threat about controls being reintroduced during the UEFA Euro 2008 championship would be considered “a hostile gesture” despite the Prague agreement for participation in joint patrols.
