17/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 16 May, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health backed a Commission proposal to review certain measures in place due to classical swine fever outbreaks in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the absence of any new outbreak in the surveillance zone in place, pork meat from this zone will be able to be marketed. Tests have to be carried out regularly in all the holdings in the protection and surveillance zones. Movement of animals to a designated abattoir has to take place under strict surveillance by competent authorities. Because of the nature of the virus, disease prevention and control measures are to be maintained for at least 40 days. Movement of pigs into the surveillance zone is also banned. The situation will be reviewed in mid-June.
