Commission does not oppose Suez/Gaz de France merger

Brussels, 17/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The proposed merger of French companies Suez and Gas de France does not appear to infringe European legislation on the internal market (freedom of establishment and freedom of movement of capital). According to European press, the spokesman for Charlie McCreevy, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, said that it did not seem that the French government had violated any EU rules in this case. The Commission is due to make a statement on this proposed merger in terms of competition law. It twice wrote to the French authorities to try to shed light on the sequence of events leading to the announcement of the merger of the two French companies (see EUROPE 9157 and 9144). Commentators suggest the announcement had the effect of undermining the hopes of Italian company ENEL of merging with Suez.
