17/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Commission is to create an expert group on customer mobility in relation to bank accounts. The group will identify any legal, administrative or other obstacles that customers meet when changing bank accounts. In particular, the group will address the issues relating to the cost of opening, maintaining and closing an account. “For customers to have access to the best products, they need to be able to switch bank accounts easily. However, in practice customers often face difficulties when they try to do so,” said European Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy in a press release. The group will comprise experts from consumer organisations and financial players. It will submit a report containing its recommendations on how to overcome the obstacles identified in the first half of 2007. Applications for membership of the group are open until 16 June 2006.
