28/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - 'The situation in Malta's administrative detention centres (migrant holding centres, Ed.) is unacceptable for a civilised country and untenable in Europe, which claims to be the home of human rights,' explains a report by Guido Catania (GUE/NGL, Italy) on migrant holding centres in Malta, adopted on 27 April by the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee. Giusto Catania MEP, rapporteur, explains in a press release: 'The condition in the Maltese centres is worse than in other centres visited by the various delegations of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. But the terrible thing is the very nature of temporary administrative retention, which itself causes human rights violations.'
