ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) distribution

In Turkey, CARREFOUR, number two in the world for distribution, has acquired a 60% stake in GIMA, the third largest local supermarket chain which has 81 shops. It will also be buying up the 56% FIBA holds in ENDI, the fourth maxi-discount store in the country with 45 sales outlets. As 44% remainder is in the hands of GIMA, CARREFOUR will therefore control the final totality of ENDI. CARREFOUR has not disclosed the cost of the deal but it is estimated to be around EUR 100 million. This deal with enable the French, who are currently the second main player in the food distribution sector in Turkey with a turnover of EUR 702 million in 2004, to become the market leader. GIMA and ENDI obtained a joint turnover of EUR 384 million in 2004.
